randomness...: October 2004

My opinions, updates on my life, all sorts of "randomness"...

Around U of M's campus there were signs up advertising Victoria Secret's "Find This Dog" campaign. Find one of the dogs hidden on campus, and receive a free gift. Roth was in the computer lab, when there it was. A little pink polka dotted dog with a tag around its neck that read "You Found Me!" I've been on this "I want a puppy" kick, so Roth decided this since that clearly is not happening, this was the next best thing so she gave it to me. I was in Chicago this weekend, so she went to the store for me, not knowing what the free gift was.

This was what she found:

The most ridiculous pink hat ever. I love it. And I get to keep the dog. Not quite what I had in mind, but I guess for now it'll do.

Disturbing article in The Chronicle, Duke University's newspaper.
"The Jews"
by Philip Kurian

"It is well known that Jews constitute the most privileged “minority” group in this country... After World War II, overt anti-Semitism gradually subsided, in part because of American response to Hitler’s murderous regime, but largely due to Jewish association with whiteness and the privileges white skin affords. In short, Jews can renounce their difference by taking off the yarmulke. Clearly, this is not a luxury enjoyed by all minority groups...

"What’s worst is that the “Holocaust Industry” uses its influence to stifle, not enhance, the Israeli-Palestinian debate, simultaneously belittling the real struggles for socioeconomic and political equality faced, most notably, by black Americans. As the world-renowned historian John Hope Franklin mentions, the U.S. decision to authorize federal funding of a holocaust memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.—hallowed ground otherwise reserved for commemorating U.S. history—camouflages this nation’s guilt in our own crimes against humanity: the Native American genocide and slavery."

There's more, but that's enough to quote. I just can't believe that it was actually printed. To name an article "The Jews" and then fill it with such blatant anti-Semitism... He twists everything around and puts down Jews because of the color (or lack of color) of their skin. How's that for irony?

On a positive, unrelated, note, game 7 was amazing & the Red Sox are going to the World Series!! Awesome...

Shabbas starts soon, and things are good. We're having people over for dinner, so food is being cooked, I'm making a veggie cholent for tomorrow, and I'm in a great mood. I love "Shabbas calls," when you get to talk to people you haven't talked to all week (or even those you talk to everyday) and wish them a Shabbat Shalom. I love Shabbas. :)

Shabbat Shalom!

Succot was wonderful. Spent the first days in Boston with Roth. Totally great--got a glimpse into her world. Did so much walking I thought my calves were going to fall off, but I loved it. Then on to New York so I could be a total tourist, complete with a trip to Times Square, the MET, and Central Park. After that it was back to A2 for Simchat Torah. Things were fun here, as always, but in retrospect I kinda wish I had stayed in NYC for a few more days. Simchat Torah in NYC is always amazing, plus I had friends who were there for chag that I would have loved to see...

I've been playing around with different cell phone companies, trying to figure out who to go with instead of T-Mobile. Finally decided on Cingular, which changed to Verizon, so obviously I ended up with Nextel. Ridiculous, right? I have 15 days to change my mind, so give me feedback...

I'm in NYC, in Times Square, and I'm sitting in Starbucks doing work. Let's discuss how huge a dork I am...
